Proper names for fishing lures?
Why is it that lures sold in stores do not have proper names? Even a packet of Eagle Claw offset worm hooks doesn't have the word "hook" on the package let alone any useful description of what the hooks actually are other than the size. Like google image search "plastic grub" and you will get tons of pics of these things. Yet, these do not exist in stores around here simply because they are never called "grubs" on the packaging. Instead everyone calls them, "short worms". Store help don't even know what "EWG " or "plastic grub" are, not that I can blame them. Store help are always extremely unhelpful for just about anything since the 1990s.
I never really thought about this until someone (a non-fishermen) wanted to get something for me and I was like "uhhh sure. 3/0 size, offset EWG worm hooks and 3 inch plastic grubs in any sharply contrasting colors". They even wrote that all down, but returned empty handed because none of the packaging had that on it and store help were clueless. When shown images online, the non-fishermen was like, "oh! they had those!"
Maybe it is because so many things are registered trademarked and copyrighted that common place names for things are akin to using "bandaid" for bandages and other companies can't use "grub" in the description. Perhaps, baits are commercialized that using "grub" is "too old fashioned in this modern world" and marketing shows if you call it "Mister Twister Curly Tail Bassageddon" people will buy more of them.
Well, screw it. I'm going fishing with my, "Uber Chickeny Catfishsplotation Devil Hearts" (aka chicken liver) and freeze my ass off in the snow. Wish me luck.
