I've seen my buddy pul in a 19 inch salmon on a #20 midge and I've hooked a 18 inch salmon on a #12 streamer, equivalent in size to a 1/16 oz panther martin. I've also hooked into a a 20 inch rainbow on a #10 dry. If you want to filter out the smaller trout, you can use bigger lures like rapalas and jig or articulated streamers and mouse patterns, but you might miss the more cautious big fish. Compared to other trout, brown trout are more predatory and prone to hit bigger lures. I've also read that big brown trout are easier to catch at night. Pic related is a brown I caught on the same amber wulff fly as a 20 inch rainbow.
