They are generally water resistant, they do clock things, and different models have different features. Mine has a calculator, alarm, stopwatch/timer functions, and a calendar, and is pretty rugged...but has no backlight (huge bummer). If you're looking for a watch with added usefulness during a "survival" situation, you may have different priorities depending on your bent and skill set. For example, you may want a watch that's analog instead of digital (compass). Perhaps a polished back (signal) or domed faceplate (fire) would be of use to you. Then again, we're delving into territory that could potentially make the watch not a timepiece any more. Just go with the Casio of your choice.
