>>838928It really depends on where you are fishing. In freshwater you can often get away with running out of line because most fish won't break the line (exception of big stripers, big catfish obviously.) Most fish don't have the pull and instead only snap a line if you don't give the line enough springiness by having your pole angled correctly. If your pole is as close to perpendicular to the line, you can most times land fish without trouble.
Though, I suppose if you have low test line, you may have trouble. But, really though, you need high enough test to pull in your target fish that may temporarily get the line tangled around an obstruction without breaking.
In saltwater, if you run out of line, that's normally the end of the story. Hope the line snaps or the knot slips otherwise you may lose your entire pole.
