http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallows_BayIt's a great place to kayak, bird watch (lots of Bald Eagle early in the year before the Osprey chase them off, Osprey and Blue Heron) and go fishing. I love watching the osprey catch fish and in doing so they can clue me in to where the fish are hiding. You just have to be mindful of the tide and careful to avoid scraping any of the scuttled vessels. Back in the cove, right of the boat and kayak launches, it isn't so much of an issue but out in the mouth of the bay and north along the shore there is a lot of wreckage (check the aerial view on Google Maps, it's wild looking).
I'm not ashamed to admit in addition to not being able to fly fish I'm godawful with a baitcaster so my weapon of choice is a sort of spinning/finesse setup. Always fairly light rods with spinning reels. The local Dick's Sporting Goods had a sale a few weeks ago where if you bought one a few certain reels you got a Berkley rod for $1. I left with a nice light-action rod that still had a strong backbone and an Abu Garcia Cardinal that I lined with 6-lb trilene mono. The fun thing about such a setup is if you hook into a modest size bass it feels like you're fighting a marlin and if you find a lunker it's like a battle with a shark. The trade-off is that you should be prepared for the big'uns and run a loose drag. If I hooked a massive bass, channel cat or one of those 4-foot snakeheads swimming around out there they could easily break the line or bend my rod in two. You have to play them like you would a big game fish.
