Probably would have been better off cutting the root stock off at a low bud in winter so you are only budding onto 6 months of growth or so.
This problem probably doesn't apply to T budding, only chip budding. The bark was slipping heaps, so in hindsight I probably could have T budded. Not that I've ever done that before either.
