>>366634I went up Pen-y-ghent this Sunday in the midst of the big storm (by British standards anyway). Despite sideways hail, walking in a cloud and being blown about by the wind, there were still a couple dozen other walkers heading up. Though this is a hill I've practically queued to get up on a nice day.
I know I've certainly not found anywhere in England where you can really escape from other people. Camping on a mountain top in the Lakes a few weeks ago, packed up by 7:30am just as the first walker came over the crest of the hill (ramblers mang, usually old blokes with calves of steel, always overtaking us without breaking a sweat). That's not to say I've never been on a walk where I've not passed a single person, but it's definitely the exception.
Best bet would be to head as North as possible, Scottish highlands are probably as remote and removed from civilisation as you're gonna get. Closest to "wilderness" at any rate. There's a certain appeal to the rural landscape that I recommend you sample though. Remote enough to get away and relax, but you're never too far from a village, and consequently a pub.
