>>1227949 doesn't surprise me. California has shit-tons of gentle grasslands and open oak savannas, particularly along the Sierra foothills and Coast Ranges. They have the same problem as the Palouse, though, in that it's really only sunny and green for 2-3 months of the year in early/mid Spring (if it's a wet year).
