The label says one should throw it on top of an anthill (and it works this way), but I found out that putting an adhesive tape around a young tree with the adhesive outwards and glueing the granulate to it keeps ants away. It basically works as an impermeable barrier.
It works as long as the rain does not wash the thing down, that is at least for a month (it did not rain that long here...).
This is in fact the most effective way of getting rid of aphids I found so far. Once ants are not allowed on tree, other insects can feast on aphids uninterrupted by bloodthirsty attacks launched by the ants and the ants no longer supply new aphids.
You can try the same with the table legs.
