>>160260for me its mainly packability and that the hatchet was my first woods tool I really got to work with as a kid so its what I'm most comfortable using, I own larger axes but I keep going back to a hatchet size axe for trips to the woods, it offers finer carving because you can easier hold right under/on the head and it can cut hours of time off your project if you use it correctly, also due to the laws in national forests where I'm at it is sometimes a legal issue to carry various knife designs and lengths so sometimes I'll only carry a hatchet and maybe a small folder on small trips, if you are going to process a lot of wood for like building a more permanent shelter structure or something I would want a larger axe but for just wood for a fire for 1-2 nights a hatchet does the job with flying colours
