I looked at the sawyer and really liked what I saw, at least what is advertised. I read an article about independent testing on the sawyer. When it was brand new it worked as advertised, but after a year of light use the filter no longer worked well and let something like 40% more stuff through... I'll see if I can find the link.

One cool thing about the lifestraw, when you buy one, they donate more lifestraw equipment for developing countires for water purification. The lifestraw has been rigorously tested and works as advertised with no loss of filtration. It's designed to stop flowing water once it reaches it the end of its lifespan. So yes it filters less than the sawyer before it's spent, but according to what I read the Sawyer continues to flow water well after its filter has been comprised.

Here's a wild idea.... ditch you rent, and take out a home loan. Since you have the land and house you have assets to loan against. Take out a loan that cheaper per month than your rent, and use that to improve the house.... hell a really nice modular isn't THAT expensive. My brother has one and its beauitful, I mean really genuinely nice.

Get an outdoor wood stove, or coal stove, or pellet stove. Add an addition that gives two 12x12 bedrooms. Throw away the air conditioners and buy a few nice window mount ones. You'd have a quiet house in the country and could really raise your family Living the simple life.

According to my late grandfather, this used to be a road that crossed the property. He said he remembered horse dawn wagons crossing this. It's obviously not been used any time in the last 70 years. There's no road now within a mile of it. Beavers have set up camp here the last few decades (I remember them as a little kid) or more, and have dammed it up, and have made a pretty sizeable wetland swamp above this area.
