I'm not very good at lighting fires and sometimes I have trouble even with dry wood that is splitted. I spend a good deal of time gathering firewood and tinder anyway, so it's not a big deal to split some wood just to make sure I succeed. Now that I think about it I've never lighted a fire without splitting some kindling first. I've been doing it since I was a little kid.
