Cant recall which one but the better boonie hats have some rigidity to them with the brim or a wash will cause it to go wild without a hat stiffener spray, starch or ironing. The USGI one is stiff for example. If the brim can bow slightly downward that also helps in not needing as much brim length as it will shield your eyes. A short brim won't do much for the back of your neck regardless and that's what is so nice about a ten dollar straw hat besides its lack of portability.
I always like nyco (nylon cotton), polycotton (polyester cotton), or a hemp blend as they breathe and dry faster, last longer, and weigh less.
Nylon will weigh the least but sparks will burn a hole in it. Outdoor Research has a good guarantee too.
I use Seattle Sombrero, straw at home, patagonia hemp hat, and a stormy kromer boonie.
During winter I wear a wool m43 german wool hat. The wool ones on varusteleka are very similar.
