That said, I think there is a certain niche for Gore-tex boots, if the temperature is cool enough outside and the hike not strenuous enough for sweat to be a factor, and if you will only be exposing your feet to shallow puddles rather than any deep creek crossings. Gore-tex boots can also be the best choice if you know you will be hiking through a lot of mud (and again, no deep water coming in over the tops of the boots).
