>>398803There is nothing wrong with batoning a big knife. I do it all the time when splitting firewood with my Recon Scout. No problems so far and I don't expect any. I know how not to brake the knife.
If not planning extreme survival scenarios, only alternative to a big knife is a small knife. There is no way I'll take an axe for a dayhike. I already carry Bahco Laplander and you could say even that is an overkill plus a big knife fits into a smallest rucksack while a hatchet does not.
I think people hate big knives for their association with tactical zombie apocalypse survival bs and because of tradition. The reason big knives were not used in old days, was the cost of manufacture. in the 18th century a knife as good as cheapest CS Recon Scout would have cost as much as a sword.
You should study history and learn things from it, not stop thinking with your own brains. In the 18th century swords were the high tech for elite, axes were made for poor peasants out of recycled crap iron in a village by notoriously drunk half blind blacksmith. The fact that big knives were not used in old days means nothing today.
