This might be a dumb question, but I don't know what to search for/how to find out more about it, so here goes:
I grow some plants on my balcony (stuck in the city, so everything I grow has to grow in pots sadly).
Stuff I have grown over the last few years includes tomatoes, mint, parsley, thyme, rosmary, bay leaf and chili. All of these survived over years except for the tomato and chili, which I had to replant in spring. The other plants regrow after winter with minimal effort.
Beyond that I don't know shit about gardening.
Now I wanted to grow some more vegetables and I found the idea of using kitchen scraps or plants that are sold with seeds alluring, because they are cheap (much cheaper than at a store), somewhat grown already and can be gotten for free (by basically planting those I don't use but bought).
Stuff that a store near me sells and is easily available are: onions, garlic, spring onions, carrots (with greens), potatoes, radishes, bok choi, cilantro, salads, chives, turmeric and ginger.
My main issue is that I don't just want to regrow, but maybe make more plants - so I can buy a carrot and plant it, but I'd want multiple carrots in the future, rather than just this one.
To my knowledge there are 3 ways to multiply plants: Take seeds, take cuttings and just take out plants where they naturally duplicate (called dividing or something).
But how do I know what method is best for what plant? If I plant a carrot, will it grow multiple carrots like a potato does? Or do I need to let it grow seeds and plant those? Is there a good ressource on where to look this up/ what terms would you search for? Maybe its the language barrier but I have no idea what to search for - looking for "seeds" just gives me shopping sites and looking for "how to grow" usually starts with bought seeds or seedlings and just talks about how to get the plant to grow, not how to duplicate it. Maybe it's the language barrier, but I seem to have no idea what to search for.
