I buy my helmets for about $150 in the spring and fall on clearance.
Jacket I bought about 5 years ago. It could stand to be replaced, but it's seen tens of thousands of miles.
Paid $80 for my $200 MX boots new-in-box on craigslist.
$500 tekvest I got for about $200 on a pro deal.

Ebay's a great place to look for jerseys, pants, etc. $40-50 jerseys you can find for $20-ish shipped.

When I'm sliding on the ground in a cloud of dust, I'm usually thinking more along the lines of "Fuck i'm really glad I've got this shit on", not "You know, I wish I cheaped out and bought the $20 knee guards instead of the $150 knee braces...".

DR and XR's are more "dirt bike" than true "dual sport" bikes. Tough bikes, yes, but shorter maintenance intervals and fewer options for luggage and wind protection. My 525 falls into this category, which is kind of why I want a bigger more adventure-worthy moto (this bike still kicks ass for trails/singletrack, and holds its own on the highway).

+1 for maintenance. Travelling longer distances/durations makes this a little more important. It's a big reason why I'd suggest something that has friendlier maintenance intervals than a dirt-bike dualsport. My 525's manual recommends 12-15 hour oil changes. That's a day or two of good dualsport riding. Did some oil analysis and the oil's actually good for 25-30 hours, but that's still at least an oil change a month during the summer when I'm riding hard and often.

MX-type (typical "dirt bike" helmet) is probably what you'll want. I have a dualsport helmet too. Don't forget goggles/glasses. In the summer, most of the time I just wear sunglasses. Colder days or for races I wear goggles. Shitty weather and winter riding i wear my DS helmet.

Work boots are decent for around-town commuting. Get something with ankle support and a good sole, pegs will tear up cheap boots. For riding offroad, get decent MX boots. They'll save your ankles when you wipe out, and you'll do that a lot when you're first learning to ride.

>Protective gear
Vest ... I'm not a big fan of the cheap plastic roost guards, but they do work. There's a lot of options out there. Get something to start out with, but you'll probably go through 2 or 3 iterations before you find something that works well for you.
Knee protection. Again, you're going down a lot when you're first learning. I like the bigger guards, thor force/fox titan type. I bust the $20/pair guards in a few days. Knee braces (big $$) if your knees are already fucked up.
Gloves, elbow pads, armored shorts... Mechanix gloves are decent, and cheap. Most of the time I ride with $30/pair street bike gloves. The other gear you can figure out once you've got some miles on the bike.

Get what you want. I like the over-the-boot pants for my riding.

At the minimum to start out: Helmet, boots, knees, and gloves. Might want something on your elbows too.

I am huge into dual-sport-dirt bikes. Trails, enduro/harescrambles, adventure riding kind of stuff.

Busted ankles and roadrash can be prevented with ... riding gear! Good boots and chest/shoulder protection goes a long way. I don't know why ATV riders never wear this stuff.... especially considering the weight difference between bikes and quads, and that quads usually end up on top of you in a wreck.

me at a race about 8 months ago. Faceplant and slid in the dirt about 6 feet. Helmet, vest, elbow pads, armored shorts, knee braces, MX boots.... all worth it. Cost me a few minutes, but I picked up the bike and rode out the rest of the race.

Granted I already had a stash of the sticky-mounts for the helmet (though a two-pack is all of $20)... They're a bit cheaper than the Gopros.

If it were me ... I'd go with a point-and-shoot camera for photos (most even do video right now) ... if you're not big into photog, might get away with a cameraphone if you have one of those already. (I usually carry a bigger P&S (technically "bridge camera", P&S optics with DSLR style and some features) when I ride, along with the Contour. Cameraphone for some shots, but that thing takes lousy photos.)

Helmet cams are cool, but keep in mind if you take 16GB of footage in a day, you're going to have to sort through 16GB of footage * numberOfDays when you get home... I don't have the patience to sift through all of that, so I record somewhat judiciously. Most of the video I take with it is commuting around town, just-in-case... nice to have for races though.

I do crash regularly... mostly in the dirt. Wear your gear. Pic related.
Had an incident with a Jeep right in town a couple of years ago, jeep didn't see me and made a left turn right into my lane. When he saw me, he slammed on his brakes so he'd miss the minivan to my 5-oclock... had he kept going I could have made it around him. With him parked 90° in my lane, concrete curb to my left, minivan approaching on my right ... down I went, hit his rear tire. $1200 in damage to the bike, and I got a skinned knee out of it where my cheap-ass knee guard slid down when I hit the ground.
