Alpacas are good if you like an interesting herd animal, want good manure and light brush/grass/weeds eaten (not quite as good as a goat), or want to experiment with textiles. Or if you want an alarm system for predators, strange people, or scary shadows they don't recognize.
They're not really great if you want a really cheap animal, or a friendly pasture pet that will come to you easily. They come to the grain bucket but unless you are constantly out with them they really prefer their own company. And if you try to make them sociable from a baby you can actually wind up with aggression problems.
But, I like them. They suit my needs and they're fun to watch.
