USFS land in my state is some of the most unhealthy shit around. Its bug ridden and full of disease. They allow almost zero logging.
The state forests, which do get logged and actively managed, are much more resilient. And somehow we still have trails and great hiking even on those state lands.
For that matter, one of the most promising and growing mountain biking areas is on privately owned timber company land. They partnered with a local MTB club to do it. Its letting them collect some revenue on land that is regrowing or only marginally useful.
Im not saying we should transfer it all or start selling it off. Just saying its not all doom and gloom and the USFS isnt exactly perfect.
