Escaping Hill End brought me to Sofala, the oldest continually-inhabited Gold Rush town left in Australia. Like Hill End, it once hosted a massive population, although the mining there was for alluvial gold, rather than reef. Being on the main drag connecting Bathurst and Mudgee/Dubbo, it's got a cafe or two.
Being an mid-1800's town, the roads in this place were unusually narrow, with the housefronts right up to the bitumen.
