I am a wannabe computer programmer who lives in a house in the suburbs. Recently I've been thinking about how living in the modern world has made humankind soft, weak and dependent on artificial power processes. My upbringing involved the outdoors only as much as was convenient. Never have I truly lived outside of industrial society. As of right now, if the electricity went out tomorrow I would probably die within a month or so. This is not how we should be living.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn basic survival skills? Obviously having food in storage and learning how to use firearms is my first step. But beyond that I have no idea. Is there some kind of definitive book I can obtain to learn all I need? Like I said, I live in the suburbs and don't think I can really learn to farm or raise livestock here. I'd like to save up money and someday get away from this rotten world but that's going to take a long time.
tl;dr help a nerd who grew up indoors learn to survive outdoors
