I'm out at Smith Rock right now. I've convinced my mom to climb with us tomorrow and I'm looking forward to that! Probably going up a 3p 5.4 on Koala Rock.

>>2846975There's an entry in the 2023 AINMC volume that describes a new climber on their first rappel who, when told to take out their PAS, removed their entire rappel setup and descended using only a friction hitch. This included a free-hanging section during which they would pull themselves up to unweight the rope and then shift the hitch down and then drop onto it and repeat. When they were 10ft from the ground the hitch failed and they fell. I'm not sure it was explained how the failure occurred... I'll see if I can find that. Anyway to answer your question that wouldn't work on a free-hanging rap and it could apparently fail unexpectedly.
