Deer by nature seek out disturbed areas and clearings where their favorite underbrush grows.
Pic related is smilax, aka greenbriar. It’s a thorny vine, dozens of varieties grow wild in the southeast, and it’s one of the deer’s favorite forage foods. In fact, if you see the vines chewed back, it’s a safe bet that deer are in the area.
Wouldn’t know about duck or upland birds. I’ve never been.
