If he lived on the boat he could have saved up quite a lot in a short time and then sold the boat and moved on to a Swan. You probably know this but when you're actually part of a local scene it's a lot easier to find deals that are much cheaper than what you'd see on the internet or swap favours for a discount etc. Could have skippered for the owner of the Swan first or who knows what.
Anyway you can get 60s and 70s Swans for under $50k or even $40k and their wooden finishes are beautiful (I much prefer them to today's boats - pic-related).
Also this is a cool project for anyone with time and money on their hands.
