I'm super upset, but I guess I shouldn't be as upset as I am, as I guess my plant acted as a sort of "trap plant" for them to clear the way for my real, actual pumpkin crop. I guess that's what you call a blessing in disguise? Supposedly they only last for one generation during the summer, scarcely a second, which means they likely blew their load all over that one accidental plant.
I think vine borers are late summer pests, so I'll have to be extra, extra vigilant for them as my real pumpkins grow. Them and the mildew problem when it starts getting rainy again. Still, I fucking hate bugs like you wouldn't believe. Only bees and some ants get a pass.
