>>293576Matter of fact, I think the ban on bikes (bicycles, that is, not motorcycles) is mostly because the creaky old David Brower types find bikes offensive, not because they're actually bad for the trails. From what I remember, there's only ever been one study on this. It was done in New Zealand some years ago, and it showed that mountain bikes caused slightly more trail damage than hikers but quite a lot less than horses and mules--which are, of course, welcome in any wilderness area and a monstrous pain in the ass if you're on foot. On the other hand, even if bikes were allowed, most of those trails aren't really rideable, so it may be a wash.
