I worked in Champex-Lac one summer, in "Auberge du Lac" which was one of the official "refuge" on the TMB trail, it closed one or two years ago.
that area is beautiful, it's low enough that you still get a good tree cover, and enjoy nice summit views.
Pic is in Pays Basque, a 6 day hike start of august, everyday I'd start ou at 200-300m elevation, climb up to the 1200-1300m range, and walk the ridge line before coming back down at the end of the day. This one going down into the clouds was ablessing, I was ther in the thick of the heat wave, and I was basically out in the sun above the tree line from 11a.m to 5-6 p.m
