I just asked my dad a lot of questions, went off and read tons of books on construction, then would ask him more questions, repeat.
That's probably the best way to go. Reading about it will give you the general knowledge, but trust me there are a lot of small details that you won't find or will miss that are critical. Getting the field experience will help you a lot too.
