If you want self-defense for the trail, that's pretty smart honestly. At the ass end of the trail or cross-country, you're at least several hours from police help, you're on your own. What I ended up with is, I have a Hill People chest kit bag and I have the gun in the specially designed pocket at the back. It's probably the most accessible a gun can be without being open carry. You could try one of those Sneaky Pete holsters, they're designed to look like cell phone/battery holders, but for anything bigger than a compact it's going to look pretty suspect. Make sure to get a leather one. I have one of those too but like the kit bag better. Or do waistband, whatever.
If you want to know which pistol to get, go over to /k/ and browse the handgun general or just post a thread asking. I can't really tell you, you need to learn about them.
If you want to get to hunting, you can hunt with a semi-auto rifle (depending on your region) and that would make it double as a boogLARP gun. I would again recommend just going to /k/ and spending some time learning about semi-auto rifles before buying one, the only thing I'll say is: look at the SKS or AK. Most Americans like ARs, which means they also panic-buy 5.56 every election year, while Commie ammunition stays much more available.
I really don't think a shotgun is totally necessary. I have one and that's what stays next to my bed at night, but it doesn't really do anything different from what a semi-auto rifle would handle for you. If you only have interest and money for the exact minimum amount of gun you need, you want the biggest semi-auto pistol you can comfortably carry concealed and you want a semi-automatic rifle, whether you get an intermediate carbine or a full battle rifle. Note: carbine's better for indoors, battle rifle's better for outdoors, so pick your poison.
And check your laws.
