>>2845722It all really depends on your standard of living. I wanted the off grid lifestyle but without the subsistence living conditions. I pretty much have everything I need and can focus on other projects like building a greenhouse, tending the garden, building flintlocks etc. I didn’t want to be washing myself in a bucket, shitting in the snow or spending all my time fetching water or splitting firewood.
The cabin was the biggest expense. About 90k spent on materials. Trees were harvested and seasoned for 2 years. All built by hand. Spent 5k on a saw mill. 25k on a trailer to live while working on it. 20k in concrete. 5k on an old 30x30 metal shop I salvaged. And 40k on solar. That cheap Amazon shit doesn’t cut it. I mean, it will in the short term, but it’s a constant hassle. All done, it took 5 years and 290k to build. I started when I was 36. Up to that point, I spent my life preparing for it, working, saving, flipped a house for money, learned construction working for an independent contractor.
Point is, I didn’t do it over night. And I still owe 160k. But I love my life, my house and I wouldn’t give it up for anything.
