There aren't that much in the way of microbes in nature that can break down processed paper-- nature itself gets fungii to do most of it.
..and then there's idiots who think that it'll break-down if it's just left out in the open. Shit-stained paper can last for decades where there <2mm rain/year and 20-40C temperatures.

You'd be surprised. Human digestion is piss-poor at extracting energy from food, so what comes out is still something like 700-800kJ/100g -- more than Coke Cola.
