>it is sumac season
Oh lawdy!
I'm making sumac-ade today. It tastes amazing. The berries on the sumac drupes are so covered in the sticky acid sap that they are grey-white and super powerful. I've never seen such a good heavy sumac before. They are so heavy and full the limbs are leaning down now. Last year the same tree had 1/4th this many and the drupes were sticking straight up since they were so sparse in comparison. At first it tasted like some odd weak berry flavor, then it went to tasting like apple juice, and now it tastes exactly like lemonade. It is pretty hard to get good sumac-ade and this year has been the best ever.
The real problem is that people hate sumac so they cut it down. That's because they mistakenly think it is the poison one "poison sumac" which has the white berries and doesn't even grow in this area. I'd actually had someone trespass onto my property and cut down my entire sumac orchard the very week I was going to harvest. I was super pissed.
