As I heard somewhere recently, "someday" is not a day of the week. Just get out and start hiking. Find a local place, even if it is flat, and go for a hike. From there I think it will probably all flow naturally.
Fastrack - find a local club and join up.
Flat-footed. Nah, well, I doubt it. I'm pretty flat footed and find with good insoles I can do just about anything. I'd be more concerned about long distance running than hiking/climbing.
