>>479344What varieties are you growing? I live near Chicago and have good luck with early types: Sugar Baby, Cream of Saskatchewan, Takii Gem, ect. I start them 2-3 weeks before they go outside in newspaper pots under fluorescents. Going to try bigger this year.
They really want heat. You can use plastic mulch to heat up the soil, or put them by something that retains heat. I grew this plant (Takii Gem) on my deck last year. I planted it in what essentially was a black sack filled with compost, garden sox or something. It gave me 6 nice melons pretty quick.
