Used a map + compass + cycle computer (measure distance to next turn on map, check odometer at crossroad to see if it's the right turn). Had a handlebar bag with map sleeve on top. Occasionally asked locals (memorable quote: "they've moved the river since your map was made, you have to take this road instead").
