A lot of typical “old growth” in the Adirondacks is mixed hemlock hardwood stands, lots of maple, birch, beech with overstory hemlocks and sprinkled in spruce, depending on where you are. Would be more ash, but EAB is decimating that throughout the northeast. A lot of the white pine that I see nowadays is old plantations which is unfortunate, and spruce/fir is mostly up in the northern Adirondacks that leaks in from Canada and the other northeastern states.
