Decide on the features you really want (transmission/suspension setup (enduro, MX, dualsport), displacement, hydraulic vs. cable clutch... drill down to a couple models. Visit a few dealers and see how they treat you. Scope out bikes on craigslist so you have an idea what they're going for through personal sales.
