People ITT are pretending trails are something bad. I live near the Alps and if I go to one of the 100s of less popular trails on a weekday I'll meet like 5 people during the entire day.
I'd rather walk through beautiful alpine landscapes instead of bushwacking through the same forest for hours in the wildnerness. Northern Scandinavia and the Balkans still have some wilderness though (pic related was in Sweden this year). Also, the cool thing in Europe is that you're walking through mountains and forests to arrive in a small rural village with an old church that just fits into the landscape, because it has been there for hundreds of years. In America you have wilderness or walmart, no villages just smalltowns.
