I'm an amateur fishing dude that just started this year. With the ponds and lakes icing over, but not thick enough to walk on, I've been going to a local river and bank fishing that. It is a muddy, rocky, shallow river, I'd estimate 15 ft deep max in the channel, maybe more. There are lots of bends and points that I've been casting off of into the channel.
Can someone give me some tips? I've been there maybe a dozen times and haven't landed a single fish except for a carp I snagged in the tail one night. There are largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, catfish, carp, and some other silver fish that I forget the name of.
I've been using pic related a bit, but I keep getting snagged up in rocks. Mostly I'd like to go for walleye (and pike if there are any in it, not sure) now that it is winter. I've also used the pic related rig but had minnows on a 2/0 octopus hook instead of a jig with no luck either.
Should I just cast into the channel and let it flow with the current? Do I need to reel it in slowly like a crank bait, or should I bounce it along like a bass jig? Maybe I need an entirely different type of rig? I'm fucking losing my mind over not catching anything lately so any pointers or tips will be appreciated. Thanks all
