If you believed you were in mortal danger and were forced to defend yourself with a lethal weapon you should have reported it as soon as it was possible, not only to clear your name but also to press charges against your assailant, who by the way is in need of medical attention.
Otherwise the longer you wait to report this the more it will look like you are evading punishment for an unlawful act, compounded by the fact that you left someone with a potentially fatal wound to their own devices while allowing the media to inform you of his status.
