Weights are often used with live bait or cut bait or whatever non-artificial bait where you just cast it out and wait for the fish to bite.
But for artificial baits where you are actively casting and reeling to create the action, the lures are already weighted to achieve the desired effect so you shouldn’t add extra weight.
The exception is when you’re fishing soft plastics like artificial worms or minnows. These are designed so you add your own hook and weight in a number of different ways to achieve the desired action and effect.
