People literally do it so they can take pictures of it and attentionwhore on social media that they went somewhere. And its almost exclusively city-folk, too.
I remember screencapping a poster here a few years back on some rescue looking for a lost tourist backpacker, whose message for help with large rocks and reflective emergency blanket was turned into cairns and the blanket thrown away by a group of passers by while he tried to look for water or make a signal or something.
