You dont wear the uniform on hikes often, they are normally just for meetings and ceremonies. The exception is the yearly scout camp where most scouts are required to wear their uniforms.
The whole "nice guy" boyscout is more of a meme than anything. Scouting was created to try and teach young men civic responsibility and prepare them for military service. Most troops keep up this legacy others take a more "liberal" approach. .
