>>2753900So you make a cast and it winds up piled on top of its self?
That could be a couple things
>open loopTh rrf increased wind resistance of an open loop can cause your cast to run out of gas and wind up piling on top of its self
>poor energy transferIf the rod doesnt properly and efficiently transfer energy to the line the cast will run out of gas on it's way to the destination, collapsing the loop an DC piling it on top of its self
>windIf you're casting in to wind your line will run out of energy faster. Even a tight loop with good energy transfer collapses in wind if pushed too far.
>leader taperIf a leader isnt stout enough it wont turn over nicely. One of the reasons I like my heavy leaders is the extra mass and stiffness gives it more power turning over it's hard to throw a #12 hares ear on a 7.5 foot 2x leader and not turn it over. That said, you should be able to cast a #12 dry fly on 4x just fine.
Bottom line is the two hardest things about fly fishing are casting and getting deep without snagging. They're both as much art as science, just keep practicing. Also if you know anywhere with sunfish they can be a great confidence boost, and sometimes you can double up with dry/dropper rigs.
