Go to these events with the mindset to learn new things. The people you meet there will be people who obviously share some of your interests. Talk about the things you are there to learn and do with them. The social bridges you build, in those situations, will aid you in doing things with people outside of those specific events. Most importantly, go with the flow and never feel the need to impress anyone or talk about things out of context from the tasks at hand. Allow the other people to bring up their own topics of discussion, don't add new topics. That is the best way to find out who matches your hobbies and interests beyond the tasks at hand without you putting your foot in your mouth.
