I'd say a good greenhouse is a must for any kind of backyard/homestead set up. They're very simple to build and can really up the amount of food you produce without increasing the amount of land you need by nearly as much.
When I was younger, we turned a 4x5 cement porch on the side of my Mom's house in to an attached greenhouse with just some 2x4s and corrugated fiberglass. She grew enough tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers that she had to give stuff away to the neighbors.
