I was out innawoods last night doing a field recording and I had plenty of time to sit alone in the dark and spoop myself out. In the darkness a fucking deer snuck up on me (neither of us seemed to know about the other) so I startled it and it hissed in my face so loud that I thought it was a fucking mountain lion and I was a goner.
I had bear spreay with me so I clutched the spray can in the dark for another hour or so before getting my recording rig and bugging the fuck out of there. I suspect bear stpray would dissuade almost any predator if you were able to get a shot at it. Sadly, an ambush predator like a mountain lion would never give you that opportunity. Apparently when a bear is in predator mode it doesn't give you any warning either, just stalks you silently and then gets the jump on you in the dark before you even see it coming.
