You genuinely believe that beyond civilization there are giants, fairies, demons, headless monsters, etc. Pic related look at that shit, they were believed to exist until like 400 years ago. Many people in 1910 still thought there were 12 foot tall giant tribes wandering around patagonia and dinosaurs deep in the jungle.
And going back to ancient greece, even without monsters shit was actually still wild. Lions in southern europe, elephants fucking everywhere, wolves everywhere, endless forests and mountains.
Too late for earth exploration and too early for extra-planetary exploration. It's a terrible feeling.
