A beginner should figure out what works and what doesn't, and should make mistakes to learn what not to do. You can't just jump right to "the best knife" and be happy with it. You'll always wonder "well, what about X?" and probably go try or buy X, and find out it's too thick/thin/heavy/flimsy/etc. for you and your uses.
I'd recommend a Buck 102 and a DC4 sharpening stone.
