For local shops half are shitty run down bait shops that seem like they're a front for illegal gambling or something, while the others are really keyed in on what works well and they'll always give worthwhile advice.
For basic gear like rods and reels, i usually go online, but sometimes BPS will have a sale. Online is best because you can watch and wait for a good price. As much as I hate Amazon the free shipping has made it the best deal for a few things, and fishusa is also good. Ebay can be good too.
